cities apart/la révolution

Trying to sort through the confusion, upheaval, turmoil and outrage is what will define 2020 for most of us. No longer is life black and white. It’s all grey and out of control.

In the midst of the shutdown, a friend found himself stranded halfway across the country in an unfamiliar city. It was the end of a harsh winter. His sense of isolation and the struggle to get home came to me via handwritten notes, like the letters we had exchanged years ago. The need for connection through words became important once again. So after 20 years, his text once again became a key element in my work. Things change, things stay the same.

This series has marked a return to polyester film, which is a medium I worked on years ago. This time around I am using an image transfer technique to prepare the artwork by hand rather than sending it out for printing. Not only is polyester a stable and archival medium, but the results are slightly blurred and flawed, reflecting the gritty imperfections of life in the city.
